Wessel + O’Connor Fine Art is pleased to present an
exhibition of work by renowned photographer David Levinthal. It
will be the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.
The show will consist of examples from bodies of work which span
the breath of Levinthal’s 4 decade artistic career,
with images from the series The Wild West, Hockey, American Beauties,
Baseball, Space and XXX. The majority of these works were created
using the 20 x 24" Polaroid Land camera, one of only
5 in existence since the late 1970's. Levinthal has used it to create
photographs that explore and confront various social issues by ingeniously
utilizing toy figures to create work that mimics and casts
doubt on representations of American icons and contemporary myths.
David Levinthal was born in 1949 in San Francisco, CA and received
his MFA in Photography from Yale University. Numerous publications
of his work have been published, including: Hitler Moves East: A
Graphic Chronicle, 1941-43 (a celebrated collaboration with Garry
Trudeau), Barbie Millicent Roberts, and Baseball. He was the
recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1995
and a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship
in 1990-91. His works are included in numerous noteworthy public
museum collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art,
the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and in New York, the Whitney Museum
of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum
of Modern Art. He lives and works in New York City.
